HyperCard
HyperCard is a multimedia authoring tool created by Bill Atkinson and released by Apple Computer in 1987. It was incredibly popular, and it was used to create presentations, games, and even catalog physical media (and access it with a robot arm). Its uses were as diverse as web sites are today. Two brothers, Rand and Robyn Miller, used HyperCard to create the The Manhole, a playful adventure game for children, and eventually Myst, the best-selling computer game for almost a decade. HyperCard was as an inspiration in the creation of key internet technologies including HTTP and JavaScript. Its cursor of a hand with a pointing index finger was used in the first web browsers to indicate a hyperlink, a convention that continues to this day.
I was also inspired by HyperCard, and spent quite a bit of time making games with it. When I was twelve to thirteen I managed to create two mostly finished and technically playable games: Beaver Pelt Man and Pump It Up.
