Maupiti Island
Maupiti Island is a point-and-click detective mystery game, and a sequel to Mortville Manor. It was originally released for Amiga in 1990, then for DOS and Atari ST in 1991, along with updated artwork. It has beautiful graphics, a unique text-to-speech system, and an intriguing mystery for the player to unravel. It’s also considered by some to be the most difficult adventure game ever made.
You play as Jérôme Lange, a private detective. While on a voyage to Japan to visit a friend, you take refuge on an island to avoid a hurricane. There you’re asked to investigate the kidnapping of a woman named Marie who disappeared the same night you arrived.
Maupiti Island is a uniquely challenging experience. It took me 145 hours to complete the game, and that was with some occasional guidance from Dronon. I drew maps, made spreadsheets tracking character’s movements, and more than once I had to learn about a topic outside of the game to progress. If you enjoy a challenging detective game, it’s well worth your time.
If you’re less stubborn than I am (or even if you aren’t) don’t hesitate to consult Dronon’s guide. It can help you through some of the less interesting challenges the game offers, so you can focus on the good stuff.

Part 1
Jérôme Lange is stranded on Maupiti Island and a woman has disappeared. Join me as I try to unravel the mystery of why I keep playing games people describe as “Too hard for the average gamer. Maybe even way too hard.”
