Who Killed Brett Penance?: The Environmental Surfer is an FMV murder mystery game written and directed by Shannon Gilligan. It was developed and published by Creative Multimedia in 1994. This was originally part of the “Virtual Murder” series, later renamed the “Murder Mystery” series, and also referred to as the “Who Killed” series.
Who Killed Brett Penance? is a classic 90s multimedia CD-ROM experience created in Macromedia Director. You play as a detective, with your assistant Lucie Fairwell to guide you. (She’s played by Sheryl Lee, who also played Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks. The game’s packaging is quite happy to remind you of this.) You investigate by clicking around scenes, selecting icons, reading text, and occasionally watching video clips of interviews. You’re on a tight deadline to learn as much as possible before you’re quizzed at a press conference, followed by choosing a suspect. Interestingly, the game has multiple outcomes to choose from, with slightly different clues for each.
